About this specimen

A single fluorite crystal the colour of frozen lavender water perches on a knuckle of dark cassiterite matrix, and the colour has gathered at the edges: the shoulders and the lower right corner deepen to violet while the broad faces stay near water-clear. Look into it and faint interior seams trace the outline of a smaller cube, the earlier crystal the later one grew around. A darker purple crystal breaks out of the rock on the right, and black and ochre specks freckle the front face.

Yaogangxian fluorite rarely grew in one uninterrupted sitting. The chemistry shifted, growth paused, a thin skin of impurity settled, and the next layer sealed it in — which is why ghost outlines turn up so often here. Fluorite is CaF2, Mohs 4, and parts cleanly on four octahedral directions, so a knock to a corner is the one thing this crystal will not forgive.

The specimen measures 3.0 × 2.0 × 2.8 cm and weighs 20 g. The photographs are of this crystal and no other; it comes mounted with putty on the clear acrylic block shown.
