About this specimen
Two lavender fins of botryoidal chalcedony rise from a low bank of paler, oatmeal-grey bubbles, the taller one leaning back like a wind-bent spire. Every surface is built from thousands of small spheres, glossy where the purple runs deepest and matte where the colour thins towards grey. A thin white seam of crystalline material crosses the saddle between the two ridges.
Grape agate is chalcedony in a habit no faceted crystal can imitate: silica precipitating as microscopic fibres that radiate from countless separate nuclei inside gas cavities in Sulawesi’s volcanic rock. Each ball is its own radial rosette, and the strongest colour sits in the outer skin, which is why the purple shifts as the light moves. At Mohs 6.5–7 the silica is hard, but the spheres perch on narrow necks — dust it with a soft brush, not a cloth.
The piece measures 7.1 × 4.6 × 3.8 cm and weighs 55 g, small enough to sit in a cupped palm as shown. It comes without a stand. The photographs are of this exact specimen.
