About this specimen

Look into the front face and the crystal opens into a staircase: grey-violet layers stacked in receding steps, phantom behind phantom, each one a growth surface that was dusted and then buried by the next. The outer skin stays pale ice-blue, whitening almost to frost along the left-hand cube. Cream calcite blades stand in overlapping fans along the top and right edges, and a few dark metallic specks sit in the seams.

A phantom forms when growth pauses, a film of foreign matter settles on the crystal face, and fluorite resumes over the top; the buried outline survives as a ghost of the earlier crystal. Here the process repeated many times, which is why the interior reads as terraced rather than as one inner cube. Fluorite is CaF2, Mohs 4, with perfect octahedral cleavage, and it may respond to ultraviolet light — though the strength of that response varies crystal to crystal.

The piece measures 6.4 × 4.3 × 4.1 cm and weighs 105 g, supplied unmounted. Nothing here is a stock image — this is the specimen itself.
