About this specimen

Dimensions: 6.5 × 5.1 × 3.1 cm (2.56 × 2.01 × 1.22 in); longest edge 65 mm (2.56 in).

Hubei, pyrite with calcite at 6.5 cm; a small cabinet plate. A crust of golden pyrite runs along the upper edge of the plate with pale pink calcite spreading beneath it, the two meeting in a band of rust-orange staining.

Iron sulfide with a brass-gold colour, pyrite is heavy, bright and geometrically satisfying, with striated faces on the best crystals.

Calcite is the most shape-shifting of common minerals: over 800 crystal forms have been described, and Chinese localities produce many of the best.

Hubei's Daye copper-iron mines are famous for calcite, and the province also produces fluorite and quartz from its mountain districts.

By size it is small cabinet. Condition is otherwise as photographed.
