Sawn cleanly in two and set side by side, this Brazilian geode shows both of its interiors at once — a pale cream lining of small quartz crystals that returns light in thousands of fine points rather than a few broad flashes. The rims are chalky and scalloped, as a nodule shell always is, and the two faces still answer one another almost exactly where the blade passed through.
Geodes begin as gas cavities in volcanic rock. Silica-bearing water seeps in over a long span and lines the void from the wall inward, so every crystal here grew pointing toward the centre of a bubble. Quartz, SiO2, is hard at Mohs 7 and tolerates handling well, which is why an opened nodule makes such a durable display piece — ordinary dusting will not scratch the druse.
Together the halves weigh 265 g and occupy roughly 12.7 × 6.4 × 12.7 cm as mounted, held in black iron prongs on an adjustable rod and base that lets each half be angled. What you see photographed is the geode that will ship, stand included.
