About this specimen
A slender quartz point rises off a low white ridge, colourless where it leaves the matrix and warming to a soft lilac toward the termination, with a bar of deeper violet suspended inside it like a shadow caught in glass. Below it a shelf of flatter, frostier crystals runs out to the left and thins into a pale drusy crust over rusty brown rock.
Quartz is SiO2, trigonal, Mohs 7 — hard enough to be handled without anxiety, which is not true of much on a collector shelf. The tint sits toward the tip, the usual signature of colour switched on late in the crystal’s growth. As with all violet quartz, years of strong sunlight will pale it, so display it well out of direct daylight. Naica in Chihuahua is better known for gypsum on a monumental scale; pieces like this come from its far more modest pockets.
