About this specimen
Chalky white knobs crowd upward from this Parvati Valley piece like a stand of fossil coral, each lobe rounded, matte, faintly sugary to the eye. Where the coating thins, a pale grey-green shows through from beneath, and a few small colourless blades sit in the shaded hollows between the towers. Nothing here is glassy; the whole surface carries the soft powdered look of frost on a window frame.
Botryoidal quartz builds this way when silica-rich fluid coats a surface in layer upon layer of microscopic crystals instead of growing a handful of large ones. The matte finish is geometry rather than weathering — thousands of tiny terminations scattering light in every direction at once. Quartz is SiO2 at Mohs 7 and asks for nothing beyond a soft brush. Material in this habit comes out of the high alpine valleys of Himachal Pradesh in the western Himalaya.
