About this specimen

Brassy chalcopyrite crystals sit like scattered coins across a white quartz druse, and where their surfaces have tarnished they throw blues, greens and violets that shift as the specimen moves. The quartz beneath is a mass of small colourless points, some gathered into tight rosettes, and a few grey-black patches of the underlying rock show through where the cover thins.

Chalcopyrite (CuFeS2) is the world’s principal copper ore, and the iridescence here is a genuinely thin oxide film grown on the crystal faces, not an applied coating — wiping at it will simply take the colour off. The pairing with clean white quartz is a familiar Jiangxi look, the metal reading far hotter for the cold ground it sits on.

Measuring 7.0 × 6.0 × 4.0 cm and weighing 160 g, it has presence for its size and displays from either face. Photographed loose against a plain ground; the specimen you see is the specimen that ships.
