About this specimen

Pale turquoise hemispheres crowd the face of this Yunnan aragonite — a dozen of them, each a bundle of hair-fine needles fanning from one point until the whole face turns to velvet. The colour sits between duck-egg and glacier ice and deepens a little at the centre of the larger balls. A few white sprays escape the blue along the rim, and the dark ironstone they all grew on shows through in two or three windows.

Aragonite (CaCO3) carries the same chemistry as calcite but crystallises orthorhombic, which is why it favours fibrous, radiating habits instead of blocky rhombs. The blue is generally put down to traces of copper in the fluids that fed it. At Mohs 3.5–4 the needle tips crush easily: lift the piece by its matrix and never wipe the spheres.

Measuring 8.4 × 5.6 × 2.5 cm at 115 g, it is a flat, plate-like specimen that shows best lying face-up in a tray or on a low easel. Every photograph on this listing was taken of this specimen alone.
