About this specimen
Soft grey-lavender is the true colour here, not the saturated purple this material is usually shown as. Chalcedony spheres crowd the top of the Sulawesi piece, ranging from pinhead size to roughly 6 mm and packed so tightly that in places they merge into low mounded ridges. Deeper violet gathers in the hollows between clusters, and along the right edge a patch of dark teal-green botryoidal growth breaks the palette entirely.
‘Grape agate’ is a trade name rather than a mineral name — the material is botryoidal chalcedony, cryptocrystalline SiO2, laid down sphere by sphere in cavities in volcanic rock. That origin is legible on this specimen, where the pale khaki host still forms the base and shoulders and the chalcedony grows outward from it. Mohs 6.5–7 is hard, but individual spheres sit on thin necks and knock off easily.
Size 8.4 × 5.6 × 5.1 cm, weight 160 g, offered as an unmounted natural piece with no base. What the camera saw is what ships.
