About this specimen

Hundreds of small orange crystals crowd this Moroccan plate, each a squat block a couple of millimetres across, packed shoulder to shoulder until the surface reads as one continuous rind. Colour runs from bright tangerine at the outer faces to red-brown where the crystals sit close over the ochre crust beneath, and every termination throws back a hard glassy spark.

Wulfenite is lead molybdate, PbMoO4: heavy for its size and soft at Mohs 3. Crowding like this happens when crystals nucleate faster than they can spread, so instead of a few broad plates you get a mosaic of hundreds of small ones. Handle it by the base, keep it clear of abrasive surfaces, and clean it with nothing harsher than a soft brush.

The plate measures 4.1 × 3.3 × 1.5 cm and weighs 55 g. It ships exactly as pictured, set with white putty on the clear acrylic cube seen in the photograph.
