A staircase of pastel cubes — lavender shading into powder blue — climbs across the piece, each face terraced with tiny right-angled growth steps that catch light like cut glass. A dusting of sparkling white dolomite settles into the recesses, frosting the composition without hiding it.
At one edge, brassy pyrite and a sliver of dark host rock ground the pastel palette and mark this as an honest pocket specimen from the Yaogangxian mine in Chenzhou, Hunan. The color runs subtler than the mine’s famous saturated purples — and that is exactly the appeal: soft Yaogangxian pastels of this delicacy surface far less often than dark material.
