About this specimen
Two straw-gold calcite crystals sit on a long slab of ochre matrix, each flattened into the wedge shape collectors recognise as a butterfly twin. The lower and larger one is glass-clear around its rim and clouded at the core by rusty iron staining; the upper crystal is smaller, cleaner and tilted the other way, so the pair balance across the plate.
Twinning of this sort happens when two calcite individuals share a lattice plane and grow as mirror images, which is what produces the flattened, wing-like outline. Hunan’s carbonate-hosted ore bodies are better known for their sulphides, and a matrix plate that comes out of the ground with its calcite unbruised is worth holding onto — at Mohs 3, a knock in the wrong direction will cleave a crystal cleanly in two.
The plate runs 15.7 × 7.1 × 3.3 cm and weighs 240 g, flat-backed enough to lean upright on a shelf. No stand is included; the photographs record this exact plate and no other.
