About this specimen

Bladed baryte opens across this Moroccan piece in overlapping fans and rosettes, white at the outer edges and stained honey and rust toward the middle. Over all of it lies a sprinkle of vanadinite: hundreds of small hexagonal crystals in ruby to blood-brown, each catching the light with a hard, almost metallic glint. Black specks of manganese oxide punctuate the pale blades.

Vanadinite, Pb5(VO4)3Cl, belongs to the oxidised upper levels of lead deposits, where vanadium leached from the surrounding rock meets lead in solution; it crystallises in the hexagonal system and owes its weight and adamantine sparkle to that lead. Both minerals here are soft, around Mohs 3, and the baryte blades are brittle at their tips, so this one is for the shelf rather than the pocket.

It measures 6.4 × 5.3 × 3.6 cm and weighs 105 g, noticeably dense in the hand for its size. The specimen in the photographs is the specimen you will receive.
