Milk-white quartz points crowd this small Yaogangxian plate shoulder to shoulder, and across their faces runs a scatter of dark-gold pyrite specks, most no larger than a pinhead and most of them gathered over the centre and right where the terminations sharpen. Held to the light the quartz turns half-translucent — a soft frosted white rather than water-clear.
Yaogangxian in Hunan is known first for fluorite and wolframite, but quartz is what lines its pockets and carries the ore minerals. Pyrite (FeS2) dusted onto finished quartz faces records a late pulse of sulphide-bearing fluid arriving after the quartz had stopped growing: the specks rest on the crystals rather than inside them. Quartz at Mohs 7 needs no particular care; the pyrite is the softer half and dislikes damp storage.
The cluster measures 5.3 × 4.1 × 2.5 cm and weighs 70 g — a comfortable one-hand piece whose flat broken back lets it sit upright without a stand. Every photograph here is of this piece and no other.
