About this specimen
A single quartz crystal, faintly smoky and sharply terminated, carries a diagonal band of mica across its front face: silvery books stacked and fanned into rosettes, olive-grey where they thicken, with patches of buff clay and one small white knot of crystal caught among them. The quartz is translucent rather than water-clear, faint veils drifting under the termination faces.
Quartz (SiO2) is Mohs 7, hard enough to shrug off ordinary handling, and it breaks along curved conchoidal fractures rather than cleavage planes. The mica is the fragile half of the partnership: it splits into thin elastic sheets at roughly Mohs 2 to 3, and a fingernail run across a rosette will lift leaves straight off it. Support the quartz, leave the silver untouched, and the contrast holds.
