About this specimen

A wedge of pale, crumbly matrix no longer than a thumbnail carries a bloom of hot magenta at one end — rhodochrosite in a violet-leaning shade, with two smaller lilac tips budding off the right-hand edge. The crystalline surface is matte and sugary rather than glassy, so the colour reads as pigment instead of reflection, and against a grey backdrop it is startling for the size of the piece.

Rhodochrosite is manganese carbonate (MnCO3), the manganese sitting in the structural position calcium occupies in calcite; the more of it the lattice takes, the hotter the pink runs. At Mohs 3.5 to 4 the mineral scratches easily, and it will etch on contact with acids — including the vinegar in ordinary household cleaners. Dust it dry and leave it at that.

Small enough to vanish inside a closed hand at 3.6 × 1.3 × 2.3 cm and 11 g, it arrives already putty-mounted on the clear acrylic cube shown. What you see photographed here is the specimen you receive.

Frequently asked questions

Will I receive the exact specimen shown?

Yes. Every specimen is a single, one-of-a-kind piece, and the photographs show the exact item you will receive — never a stock photo.

Yes — specimens like this form naturally. As is standard in the trade, some pieces are gently cleaned or trimmed; we photograph the actual specimen and describe its origin and condition conservatively.

How is it packed and shipped?

Orders ship worldwide with fully insured, tracked delivery, carefully packed to protect fragile crystals. A display base is included.

Can I return it?

Yes — there is a 14-day return window.
