About this specimen

Half a dozen slender quartz prisms fan out from a dark crusted base, milk-white along their shafts and clearing to glassy points at the tips. Their sides are ribbed with stacked growth ledges, each layer set slightly askew from the one beneath, which is what earns this Inner Mongolian habit its screw nickname. Olive-black specks freckle the prisms and thicken into a dark crust where they meet the matrix.

Quartz is silicon dioxide, SiO2, Mohs 7 — hard enough that crystals this thin survive handling far better than they look. The twist is an illusion of stacking: successive growth layers were laid down fractionally rotated, so the prism appears to spiral upward without the lattice itself ever bending. Sprays that keep all their tips intact are the ones worth holding out for.

The cluster spans 5.1 × 3.6 × 3.6 cm and weighs 31 g. It comes on the clear acrylic cube shown, which lifts the crystals clear of the shelf. The specimen pictured is the one that ships.
