About this specimen
Dimensions: 11.3 × 11.0 × 9.0 cm (4.45 × 4.33 × 3.54 in); longest edge 113 mm (4.45 in).
Golden rutile and black tourmaline share the same window in this skeletal quartz: fine golden hairs criss-cross the clear upper crystal while sharp black needles cut through them, a contrast that shows best when light comes from behind. The quartz is lightly peach-toned, with stepped skeletal terraces climbing its sides.
Lower down, a natural orange-pink earthy crust fills the hollows, and one side opens into a cavity lined with the same crust. Heavy, rugged and full of detail, this is a collector's chunk rather than a tidy point, superb on a shelf where you can turn it toward the inclusions.
