About this specimen

A dome of pale turquoise no bigger than a plum, with a surface like crushed velvet: this Yunnan aragonite is built from microscopic needles packed so tightly that the crust reads as suede until light strikes it and the whole face begins to sparkle. The blue runs even from crown to rim, thinning to white only along the broken edge where the crust parted from its host rock.

Aragonite and calcite share one formula, CaCO3, and differ only in how the atoms stack — aragonite orthorhombic and inclined to fibrous, needle-like growth, calcite trigonal and blocky. That structural preference is what produces the napped surface here. At Mohs 3.5 to 4 the needle tips are fragile: dust it with air or a soft brush, and resist any urge to rinse it.

The crust is 4.6 cm across and 4.1 cm tall by 2.5 cm deep, weighing 80 g, and is displayed on the small clear acrylic block seen in the images. Each frame here was taken of this piece alone.
