About this specimen
Yunxiao, Fujian, smoky quartz with calcite at 37 g; a miniature with a two-tone crystal. A single stout smoky quartz crystal whose termination is coated in a red-brown iron skin, with a cream calcite crystal at its side.
Smoky quartz owes its brown-to-black tone to natural irradiation of trace aluminium in the lattice, and the best pieces keep transparency through the colour.
Calcium carbonate in its rhombohedral form, calcite is soft (Mohs 3) and takes a bright vitreous to pearly lustre on fresh faces.
Fujian is China's most productive fluorite province, and its granite-hosted veins also yield the garnet, quartz and calcite that fill modern collections.
Dimensions place it in the miniature range, 4.1 × 3.5 × 2.6 cm (1.61 × 1.38 × 1.02 in) and 37 g (1.3 oz). Otherwise the piece is sold exactly as photographed.
