About this specimen
Inner Mongolia quartz with pyrite at 56 g; a small cabinet piece with a spiky silhouette. A spiky cluster of pale, frosted quartz needles pointing in every direction with small pyrite grains at the base.
Rock crystal is judged on termination quality, clarity and how the crystals sit together, and the Chinese localities have raised the bar on all three.
Iron sulfide with a brass-gold colour, pyrite is heavy, bright and geometrically satisfying, with striated faces on the best crystals.
The Huanggangliang skarn district of Inner Mongolia is one of the great mineral finds of the 21st century, known for fluorite, calcite, garnet and rare species.
Dimensions place it in the small cabinet range, 7 × 3.8 × 3.1 cm (2.76 × 1.50 × 1.22 in) and 56 g (2.0 oz). Otherwise the piece is sold exactly as photographed.
