About this specimen
Dozens of steel-grey stibnite needles cross and re-cross here, splaying from a common root into a bristling, slightly lopsided spray. The lustre carries the piece: a hard metallic shine running the full length of each blade, breaking into bright parallel lines where the deep striations catch the light. Several needles reach clear of the mass altogether and stand alone against the background, fine-tipped and unbroken.
Stibnite is antimony sulphide, Sb2S3, orthorhombic, and it draws out into blades because its structure extends far faster along one axis than the other two. It is also among the softest minerals anyone puts on a shelf: Mohs 2, soft enough that a fingernail will mark it, and the blades bend before they break. Hold it by the base, never by the needles, and keep fingertips off the mirror faces—skin oils dull them.
