Lemon-yellow pyromorphite crystals in ragged barrel-shaped sprays run up the face of this Guangxi plate, set against a low cream to pale-olive crust and a grey-brown, iron-stained host rock. The colour is acid citrus rather than the deep green usually associated with the species.

About this specimen

Lemon-yellow pyromorphite climbs the centre of this Guangxi plate in ragged sprays, short barrel-shaped prisms bunched into rosettes that read almost acid against the low cream and pale-olive crust covering the rest of the rock.

Pyromorphite is a lead chlorophosphate, Pb5(PO4)3Cl, grown in the oxidised upper levels of lead deposits where descending water reworks galena into something far prettier. It crystallises hexagonally, hence the stubby barrels, and carries a resinous to near-greasy lustre that suits the yellow far better than a glassy one would. At 3.5–4 on the Mohs scale it scratches easily, so keep it away from harder specimens in a drawer and never scrub the sprays.

The piece measures 6.1 cm × 3.3 cm × 4.1 cm and weighs 105 g. It is shown held in the hand, unmounted and without a stand — what the camera saw is what leaves the shelf.
