About this specimen

Held to the light, this Zhejiang piece reads as a low dome of pale sea-green cubes packed edge to edge until the individual crystals are easier to feel than to count. Their faces are frosted rather than glassy, which turns the green soft and pushes it toward grey; at the right-hand end a few cubes stay colourless and better lit, and along the bottom edge the underside carries a band of dilute violet. Dark matrix and a little ochre staining close the piece off behind.

The frosting is part of the crystal’s late history — surfaces reworked by the last fluids to pass through the pocket — and it is not something to polish away, since any attempt would round off the edge of every cube on the dome. Fluorite is CaF2 at Mohs 4 with four perfect cleavage directions; a soft brush and dry storage are the whole of its maintenance.

It measures 7.1 × 3.0 × 4.6 cm and weighs 139 g. No stand is included; the piece pictured, freckles and all, is the one you will unwrap.
