About this specimen
At arm’s length this Fujian fluorite reads as black; held up to a lamp, the whole mass turns deep violet. Two blocky crystals have grown into one another to build it, and not one face is flat — every surface is etched back into a mosaic of tiny stepped cubes. Paler lilac zones sit under the skin of the upper crystal, and a cream matrix rind wraps the base and right flank.
A phantom is the record of an interruption: growth halts, a film of impurity settles on the faces, growth resumes, and the outline of the earlier crystal stays sealed inside the finished one. The etching came later, when fluids began taking back what they had built. Fluorite (CaF2) is cubic and Mohs 4, with perfect octahedral cleavage, so a piece this heavy wants supporting from underneath rather than gripping by an edge.
The crystal measures 9.7 × 8.1 × 6.1 cm and weighs 695 g, cabinet size with real heft. Photographed bare in the hand, no stand: you are looking at the actual crystal on offer, not a stand-in from the same pocket.
