About this specimen

Butterscotch light passes straight through this scheelite crystal, a squat dipyramid whose faces climb in shallow steps to a sharp apex. The colour is honey-amber rather than orange, deepest where the crystal is thickest and nearly transparent along the thin upper edges. A few white mica flakes still cling near the base, left from the pocket wall it grew against.

Xuebaoding in Sichuan is the classic source for isolated scheelite of this form. Lift it and the first surprise is the mass: calcium tungstate (CaWO4) carries a specific gravity near 6, so 170 g is packed into a crystal barely 3.8 cm on its longest axis. Under shortwave ultraviolet, scheelite answers with the bright blue-white glow that made it a prospector’s ore mineral long before it became a collector’s one.

The crystal measures 3.8 × 3.0 × 3.3 cm. It is shown on the clear acrylic block it ships with, seated on a pad of white museum putty, and the photographs record this crystal alone.
