About this specimen

Turquoise is an uncommon register for fluorite, and this Yaogangxian crystal carries it right through — a clean blue-green that pales at the thin edges and pools deeper in the core. The faces are not flat. Every one climbs in shallow terraces, hundreds of tiny cube edges stacked half a step behind the one below, so the surface returns light in fine parallel lines rather than a single mirror flash.

That terracing is how fluorite grows when the feeding fluid runs quickly: new layers start at the corners and spread inward before a face can close, leaving a stepped record of each pulse. Fluorite (CaF2) is Mohs 4 with perfect octahedral cleavage, so a knock on a corner lifts a flake rather than dulling it. Store it where nothing harder can roll against it.

A thumbnail crystal at 2.3 × 2.0 × 1.8 cm and 15 g, photographed resting on a clear acrylic stand. Every image on this listing was taken of this one crystal.
