About this specimen
Rust-orange caps sit on hundreds of small quartz points across this Jiangxi plate, as though the crystals had been dipped tip-first in iron. The staining is patchy and irregular — some terminations are fully coloured, others carry only a freckle — and it sets off the pale glassy prisms between them. Brassy metallic sulfide crystals and steel-dark matrix show through wherever the quartz thins out.
Iron-bearing solutions moving through the pocket after the quartz had crystallised left this red film, sometimes on the surface, sometimes trapped just beneath it. Quartz is SiO2, Mohs 7 and untroubled by handling, which makes a druse like this one of the more forgiving display pieces. The softer sulfides in the gaps are the weak point: dry dusting only, nothing acidic.
The plate measures 10.7 × 6.1 × 4.1 cm and weighs 280 g. No stand is included; it is shown in hand for scale, and every frame here is of this exact piece.
