About this specimen
Stood on end, this is a single blade a little over five centimetres tall: bottle-green where light passes through the middle of the crystal, almost black along its thicker edges, and split down one side into a sheaf of silvery fibres that catch light like brushed steel. Two small ochre crumbs cling near the upper edge. Backlit, the green core glows; in flat light the blade reads nearly black.
That silvery fraying is vivianite behaving exactly as vivianite does. It is a hydrated iron phosphate with one perfect cleavage direction and a hardness of only about 2, so the blade parts into flexible lamellae under almost no pressure. Freshly mined material can be nearly colourless and darkens as its iron oxidises in light — keep this one out of direct sun and away from warm lamps if you want the present colour to hold.
The blade measures 5.6 × 1.5 × 1.0 cm and weighs 10 g. It arrives mounted upright on the clear acrylic block in the photographs, anchored by white putty. This is the crystal photographed, not a stand-in.
