關於此標本
把湖南那種厚重的輝銻礦板劈開，裡面等著的可能正是這樣的景象：一個內壁襯滿銀亮細針的晶洞，針晶呈鬆散的星芒狀輻射開來，每一根都亮得像是濕的。四周的洞壁是塊狀輝銻礦，沿長軸帶著條紋，並剝離成大片鋼灰色的解理面；白色的重晶石結殼則在洞的下半部堆積起來，楔入針晶基部的周圍與下方。
輝銻礦是硫化銻，化學式為 Sb2S3，也是收藏家會擁有的最軟礦物之一：莫氏硬度 2，軟到指甲就能劃出痕跡，且沿每一根針的長軸都具完全解理。皮膚油脂會使金屬表面失去光澤，因此請握持灰色母岩來拿取標本，並讓它遠離強光與潮濕空氣——這兩者都會隨時間磨平硫化銻的光彩。
