Honey-amber barite crystals blanket this plate from the Dexing copper mine in Jiangxi — glassy, chisel-shaped tablets with a wet-looking luster, crowded shoulder to shoulder over a base that shifts between pale lavender and mint-green fluorite dusted with sugar quartz. The color combination is warm over cool, and it works from every angle.
Dexing is one of China’s great copper mines but a rare name on specimen labels, which gives this piece locality interest beyond its looks. Barite’s heft — the name means “heavy” — is obvious in hand: 454 g for a palm-sized plate.
