방연석이 이렇게까지 자기를 드러내는 일은 드뭅니다. 결정면이 꽉 찬 사각형이 아니라 계단식 테두리로 자란 호퍼형 골격 큐브들이, 밝은 금속 위로 부드러운 청회색 피막을 두르고 있습니다. 이 큐브들은 놋빛 황동석 덩어리를 가로지르며 층층이 쌓이고, 그 틈에서는 바늘처럼 날카롭고 물처럼 맑은 석영이 서리처럼 뻗어 나옵니다.
골격 성장은 결정의 모서리가 결정면보다 빨리 자랄 때 일어나며 빠른 결정화의 표시입니다. 컬렉터들은 흔한 꽉 찬 큐브보다 이런 형태의 방연석을 훨씬 높이 삽니다. 푸른 금속, 금빛 황화물, 맑은 석영이 이루는 삼중 대비는 미니어처 크기에서도 실질적인 존재감을 냅니다.
