Anthophyllite

Crystal system · Orthorhombic

Anthophyllite is a silicate mineral recognized among collectors for its crystal form and distribution, with known Chinese sources.

About Anthophyllite

Anthophyllite is classified as a silicate mineral in the amphibole group — orthoamphibole subgroup and has the chemical formula (Mg,Fe)7Si8O22(OH)2. It crystallizes in the orthorhombic system and holds a steady position among silicate species.

Identification & care

Specimens usually show fibrous (asbestiform), lamellar, massive, bladed. Its color range is broad, including gray, brownish gray, yellowish brown, and greenish. The luster is vitreous to silky, the streak is white to pale gray, and specimens are typically translucent. The cleavage is perfect {110} (characteristic amphibole cleavage at ~56° and 124°). The fracture is uneven to splintery, which aids identification.

Collector notes

For collectors, Anthophyllite is a benchmark crystalline species. Anthophyllite is widely represented across Chinese provinces, including Sichuan, Inner Mongolia, Liaoning, Gansu.
