Iolite
Iolite is the gem name for transparent cordierite. Its defining trick is pleochroism strong enough to see by eye: rotate a crystal and it shifts from violet-blue to nearly colorless. Tradition holds that Norse navigators used thin iolite slices as polarizing sun-finders — a story to enjoy as legend rather than documented history.
