About this specimen
A single amethyst point does all the work here, rising clear of its matrix at a jaunty angle. The termination is a soft grape-violet that drains to near-colourless a third of the way down the prism, and the faces are bright and undamaged. Beneath it the matrix is a pale grey-green crust studded with tan flakes and small colourless crystals, with a second, smaller violet point breaking through at the lower right.
Amethyst owes its colour to iron held in the quartz lattice and switched on by natural radiation in the host rock. Those colour centres tend to develop late in growth, which is why the violet concentrates near the termination exactly as it does on this crystal. Quartz is hard, Mohs 7, and needs no special handling, though prolonged direct sunlight will pale amethyst over years — a shelf away from the window is kinder than a sill.
Compact at 3.8 × 3.2 × 3.0 cm and 42 g, it comes putty-mounted on the clear acrylic block shown in the photographs, which were taken of this individual crystal.
