About this specimen

Xuebaoding, Sichuan, aquamarine with mica and feldspar at 10.3 cm and 280 g; a cabinet plate, priced with the damage disclosed. A plate of bright golden-orange mica with pale aquamarine crystals and white feldspar across it; the supplier notes some crystals are damaged.

Aquamarine is the blue-green variety of beryl, forming hexagonal prisms with flat terminations; the Chinese material from Xuebaoding and Yunnan pairs it with muscovite and cassiterite.

Mica forms pearly hexagonal books that catch the light between the other crystals. Feldspar is the matrix of choice in Chinese pegmatite specimens: blocky cream to pale-orange crystals that set off the garnet, quartz and tourmaline growing on them.

Xuebaoding in Pingwu County is the classic Chinese source of scheelite, aquamarine and cassiterite on muscovite, mined from high-altitude greisen veins.

The piece is cabinet in size, 10.3 × 4.7 × 8.1 cm (4.06 × 1.85 × 3.19 in) and 280 g (9.9 oz). Disclosed condition: damage to some crystals. The price reflects it and the photographs show the affected area. Condition is otherwise as photographed.

Every specimen here is photographed and catalogued individually before listing.
