About this specimen
One beryl prism stands straight up out of a dark knot of schorl, water-clear, lightly striated down its length and rising about 1.5 cm clear of the matrix before its termination catches the light. The tourmaline beneath is a tight cluster of stubby black crystals dusted with pale tan feldspar and clay, and that dull ground is what throws the transparent prism into relief.
The Erongo Mountains are better known for saturated blue aquamarine, but the same pockets give crystals like this one: essentially colourless, holding only the faintest blue-green cast when it is turned against a white card. Beryl (Be3Al2Si6O18) is hard at Mohs 7.5 to 8, though a free-standing prism this slender wants its tip protected in transit and on the shelf.
A true thumbnail: 3.3 × 2.3 × 3.8 cm and 20 g. It arrives on the clear acrylic block seen in the photographs, fixed with white putty, and those photographs document this thumbnail exactly.
