About this specimen

Yunnan violet aragonite with blue aragonite at 27 g; a small cabinet piece with two colours of the same mineral.

Aragonite is chemically the same as calcite but crystallises differently, which is why it builds sprays and columns instead of blocky rhombs.

Yunnan's copper and lead-zinc districts produce the azurite, malachite, pyromorphite, hemimorphite and blue aragonite that define Chinese secondary minerals.

By size it is small cabinet, 5 × 2.9 × 1.9 cm (1.97 × 1.14 × 0.75 in) and 27 g (1.0 oz). Otherwise the piece is sold exactly as photographed.

Carbonate: never clean with acid or vinegar.

Specimens are photographed and catalogued one at a time before they reach this page.
