About this specimen
Yunnan blue aragonite at 2.9 cm; a miniature, supplied on the acrylic stand shown. A broad crust of aragonite in pale sky blue, built from fine needles packed upright so the surface is soft and even, with the pale host rock showing along the base.
Aragonite is chemically the same as calcite but crystallises differently, which is why it builds sprays and columns instead of blocky rhombs.
Yunnan's copper and lead-zinc districts produce the azurite, malachite, pyromorphite, hemimorphite and blue aragonite that define Chinese secondary minerals.
Dimensions place it in the miniature range, 2.9 × 2.6 × 0.8 cm (1.14 × 1.02 × 0.31 in). Otherwise the piece is sold exactly as photographed.
