About this specimen

Colour arrives in two layers here. The top of the cluster is a pale glacial blue, cubes stacked on cubes, edges stepped like a city seen from above, translucent enough that interior crystals ghost through the outer faces. Lower down the blue cools into a smoky lavender that deepens toward the base, and one small patch of tan host rock survives at the bottom left.

Zoning like this is a diary of the pocket. Fluorite takes its hue from trace elements and from defects in the CaF2 lattice, and both shift with the mineralising fluid; each growth stage locks in the tint that prevailed, which is why the blue meets the lavender along a line rather than a blend. Hunan is the province most associated with blue Chinese fluorite. Hold it by the mass and not the corners — at Mohs 4 with perfect octahedral cleavage, cube edges are the first thing to go.

The cluster is 6.4 × 3.0 × 4.6 cm and weighs 165 g, stable on its broken underside and needing no stand. The piece photographed here is the piece that will be packed.
