About this specimen
Blue rutilated quartz is rarely found in pieces this size. This natural rough crystal from Pakistan keeps its pointed, crystal-like form and is threaded through and through with dark blue-black needles; on the surface they cross each other in a dense, scratchy mesh, and inside they show as fine lines through grey, smoky-looking quartz.
Under a strong light the skin flashes with a steely blue sheen. The piece is left natural rather than polished, and in the photos it rests on a carved root-wood stand. It measures 15.5 × 10.3 × 7.6 cm / 6.1 × 4.1 × 3 in and weighs 1349 g / 47.6 oz. Specimens like this are traditionally kept in the home as a protective display stone.
