About this specimen
Qujing, Yunnan, messelite at 3.6 cm; a miniature. A brown host rock carrying a seam of pale crystals across its broken face, with darker mineral patches gathered around the opening where the seam breaks the surface.
Named after the Messel pit in Germany, messelite is a triclinic phosphate that grows in fossil-bearing sediments and phosphate pegmatites.
Yunnan's copper and lead-zinc districts produce the azurite, malachite, pyromorphite, hemimorphite and blue aragonite that define Chinese secondary minerals.
