About this specimen
Photographed in a dark room under ultraviolet light, this Brazilian geode egg turns coral. The opened cavity is lined wall to wall with small blocky calcite crystals, and every one burns a saturated salmon-pink, the boldest flaring almost white. Around the opening the polished shell answers in a cool glassy blue-white, the two colours meeting along a hard edge that traces the rim.
Calcite is among the most dependable fluorescent minerals a collector can own. Trace manganese in the calcium site absorbs ultraviolet and re-emits it in the orange-to-red band, which is where this coral comes from. It is emission, not reflection — the stone makes the colour rather than bouncing it back — and it needs a shortwave or longwave lamp in a darkened room.
This one has been worked: the nodule was shaped and polished to an egg with one side left open to the natural cavity, the crystal lining untouched. It stands 22.9 cm on its long axis, measures 12.7 × 17.8 cm across, and is recorded at 13 kg. The ultraviolet frame here was shot from this egg.
