About this specimen
One crystal does all the work here. It is broad and blunt-cornered, clear along the rims and softening to a milky core, and its faces are terraced in fine parallel steps so that light breaks into stripes rather than one clean reflection. The crystal leans out over a dark seam of matrix dusted with tiny glassy micro-crystals, with a second small point pushing out to the right of it.
Calcite (CaCO3) is trigonal and famously versatile in habit — the same species turns up as scalenohedral dogtooth, flat nailhead, or the stepped blocky form seen here, where growth layers stack slightly offset. It is soft at Mohs 3 with perfect rhombohedral cleavage, and it dulls on contact with even weak household acids, so keep cleaners and bare fingertips away from it.
The specimen is 3.3 × 2.8 × 2.8 cm and weighs 30 g. It arrives as photographed, set with white putty on the clear acrylic display block shown, which is included. This is the individual crystal you will receive.
