About this specimen
A drift of snow has settled on this Fujian plate: hundreds of small white calcite crystals packed shoulder to shoulder into one domed crust, sugary where the light catches their tips, with a faint celadon cast along the right-hand shoulder. Behind and below, the host rock is a dark steel-grey mass of glassy platy crystals, dull where the calcite is bright, and that contrast carries the whole composition.
Tight druses like this form when a mineral-rich solution nucleates on every available point at once, so no single crystal gets the room to grow large. Calcite is soft — Mohs 3 — and splits along three rhombohedral planes, so the crust should never be scrubbed or knocked; a puff of air is the right cleaning tool. It also fizzes in dilute acid, which is reason enough to keep household cleaners well away from it.
