About this specimen

Rounded, knobby clumps of straw-yellow calcite cover most of this plate, packed edge to edge across the high ground and opening into a broad channel of bare cream matrix down the centre, where the rock shows a fine corduroy ribbing. Each clump breaks up into faceted tips that flash individually as the piece is turned, and the yellow deepens towards gold where the crystals pile thickest.

Daye sits in skarn country, where granite pushed into limestone and left carbonate pockets that grew calcite in exactly this warm register. Coverage is what makes a plate like this work: crystal across most of the display face, so there is no dead ground when it is turned to the light. The trade-off is fragility — every head projects, calcite is soft enough to mark with a copper coin, and a drawer shared with harder specimens will wear those tips flat.

Palm-sized at 5.0 × 4.0 × 3.0 cm and 88 g, photographed without a stand. The stone in these pictures is the stone you receive.
