About this specimen
A single milk-white calcite sits nose-up on a low crust of tan matrix, the whole arrangement small enough to vanish inside a closed hand. The crystal is translucent rather than clear, its faces fine-striated and slightly waxy in the light, with a second smaller point rising behind the main termination. Where the matrix shows, it is a granular olive-brown crust studded with colourless micro-crystals.
Calcite is CaCO3, and a piece like this demonstrates the two properties collectors most often meet: a hardness of only 3, soft enough to scratch with a copper coin, and perfect rhombohedral cleavage in three directions. The species is also strongly birefringent, which is why a clear fragment laid over a printed line doubles it. Keep it dry and well away from vinegar or any household acid, which etches the surface in seconds.
The specimen measures 3.8 × 2.5 × 2.5 cm and weighs 25 g. It arrives on the clear acrylic bar shown, fixed with removable putty — bar, matrix and crystal all as pictured.
