About this specimen

Stood upright, it reads as a single leaf. This Anhui calcite is a thin straw-yellow blade just over 6 cm tall, tapering to a point, its interior threaded with feathery veins that branch from the base toward the tip. The edges are finely serrated where growth layers stack, and a small clear crystal projects from the lower centre like a bud on a stem. Backlit, the blade turns to warm honey.

Calcite reaches this form through parallel growth: thin plates of CaCO3 stacking face to face and fanning slightly outward, so the outline builds in steps while the internal boundaries stay visible as pale feathering. Handle it as the fragile object it is — Mohs 3, perfect cleavage in three directions, and a blade this thin will snap under a careless grip rather than merely scratch.

The specimen stands 6.1 cm tall on a 2.3 × 2.0 cm footprint and weighs 31 g. It is supplied on the clear acrylic block pictured, set upright with white putty. The photographs record this particular blade, not a representative sample.
