About this specimen
Straw-gold calcite blades overlap across this Hunan plate in flattened, slightly warped sheets, each meeting the next at an angle so the whole aggregate opens like a bloom caught mid-unfolding. The blades are translucent, glassy along their fresh edges, warming to amber where they thicken toward the centre, with a light rust-coloured film settled in a few of the interstices.
Collectors call this the flower-petal habit: calcite grown as broad, flattened rhombohedra that stack in overlapping tiers instead of building blocky single crystals. Calcite is Mohs 3 with perfect cleavage in three directions, so a knock delivers a clean split rather than a chip. Keep it away from vinegar, descalers and household cleaners — dilute acid will etch the shine straight off those faces.
